About Candidate
Pooneh Alizadeh is the mother of 2 lovely children and one cute puppy. She is the award-winning Artistic Director of the Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (AMED). The Academy was established in North Vancouver by Pooneh in 2004 and it continues to be an active leader in Middle Eastern dance in North Vancouver area and beyond.
Pooneh immigrated to Canada in 2000. She brought with her a strong personal dedication to Middle Eastern folk and classical dance from her cultural heritage. Her academic background includes a Masters Degree in Art from Tehran University. She is an accomplished professional performer, master instructor, choreographer, director, and producer. She has utilized her artistic passions and expertise to develop innovative performance and teaching programs.
Pooneh has performed in a very wide range of venues and events. She often is drawn upon to perform for multi-cultural festivals, presenting dances from Middle Eastern traditions, while at the same time choreographing fusions of Middle Eastern and other cultural dance traditions.
Pooneh’s teaching programs at the Academy of Middle Eastern Dance reflect her commitment both to preserving traditional dance and ensuring that the traditions as well as her fusion approach are passed on to new generations of Canadians, no matter what their own cultural backgrounds. Her classes draw people of all ages and all cultures some with advanced dance skills and some just beginning to develop their skills. Students are following up on their interest in Middle Eastern dance and in this process, are enhancing their knowledge and skills in the realm of multi-cultural dance.
Pooneh’s teaching goes beyond basic or advanced skill development, in that Pooneh believes there is no dance without real emotion as its base. She uses dance movements as a form of therapy, a true full body and soul workout! Pooneh’s approach to dance helps people to get rid of stress, anxiety, depression, also assist balance and memory in older adults. She strongly believes dance can play an important role in creating a feeling of relaxation and peace, in developing healthy relationships and behaviors, creating better self-image in her students and releasing negative energy overall. She believes that every person has the right and deserves to feel good about themselves, to accept who they are and to be happy.
She wrote several articles about dance and health in North shore news. She always helps, inspire and motivate others by her passion in Vancouver through her volunteering workshop in different places, such as hospitals, community events, senior houses, schools, mental hospitals and much more to help as many people as possible who are in need.
Why I’m running for City Council in North Vancouver:
(Different Languages, Different Cultures, One Voice)
I’m running for City Council because I believe in this city, the city that has always believed in me.
Because of my community works and my strong leadership experience which I have done in 18 years in North Vancouver, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with some of the most brilliant minds, and am endlessly grateful to have met and formed life-long friendships with people all over North Vancouver with smart and great thoughts, Now this is a time to use all your great ideas to build a better city together, a fair and equitable. My biggest goal is to be your representative and voice. You all know what this city needs better than I do. I’m here to listen. I have my ideas, but I’m just a single voice. Let’s talk and find out what we want as a community. If you know me, I’m a people person. We need new ideas and a new perspective to make sure that our city works for everyone.
I want to do this, for the people and because of the people to be their voice and representative, I am proud to say that I live here and believe in our future. One of the things I love most about living in North Vancouver is that it feels like home.” North Vancouver likes any great love; it is, easy to fall in and difficult to get over. The natural beauty is breathtaking and can rarely be competed with. My hard work in the community shows how much I adore this city. Also, North Vancouver has one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen in my life as well as it’s beautiful Mountains and Lakes. This beautiful city influences different cultures. I would be honored to have your support and vote on Saturday, October 20th. With your help, we can win by-election.
